Here at X-Met Metals we collect, and pay, for all manner of scrap metal, including scrap vehicles, from locations across the North West Region, including Bolton, Frodsham, Manchester and Ormskirk. We also offer professional and legal scrap car recycling. But can a car be scrapped without keys?
Is it possible to scrap a car without the keys?
It is usually still possible to scrap a car without the keys although this will make it more difficult for the breakers to be able to transport and move your vehicle. Of course, being able to rove ownership will be essential for scrapping your vehicle, but even without the keys this can be achieved in a number of ways, including:
- Presenting the vehicle’s V5 logbook which should have your name and address on the front
- A receipt from time of vehicle purchase
- Presenting an up-to-date SORN document from the DVLA
Will losing the car keys effect the price for my car?
Losing the keys may effect the price you are offered for your scrap car as this can mean that more time and resources are needed to scrap your car, while a replacement key may even need to be purchased. As a result, it is likely that these costs will be factored in when scrapping your end of life vehicle.
Does the car need to be unlocked to be scrapped?
A car doesn’t need to be unlocked to be scrapped as the drivers side window can be smashed to allow access to the car, and to release the handbrake, allowing the vehicle to rolled effectively. It may also be possible to siphon fuel from the fuel tank without the key by cutting the fuel pipe, but again this will take more time and cost more resources.
